What is A Native Wildflower?

NATIVE WILDFLOWERS

Definition of a wildflower (or wild flower) is that it grows wild and was not purposely seeded or planted. However, it must be noted that seed packets of a few mixed species that are sold as ‘wildflower’ meadows are the seed industry’s commercialization in selling more flowers or seeds for a profit. This practice makes the term ‘wildflower’ vague.

Urban development, agriculture, overgrazing, recreation and invasive non-native species are having a devastating effect on the native plant population. To prevent further loss of California native wildflowers numerous concerned citizens groups are being formed.

Definition of a native California plant is a plant that grew in California prior to the arrival of European explorers and colonists.
